“GIKAWATAN KO’G SMART LOAD”

Web/Tech No Comments »

"GIKAWATAN KO’G LOAD", cries a cellphone user when he checked his cellphone load after receiving the annoying message–"CHECK OPERATOR".

Anyone could be a victim of this crime in the cellphone service. The government’s regulation agency–National Telecommunications Commission–has urged cellphone users to file a complaint before their office.

"ASA ANG OFFICE SA NTC?", says a cellphone "load theft" victim. If you are deprived of your P20 out of your 30-peso electronic load, would you come to NTC and file the appropriate charge?

"PAG-SOLO", quips the poor guy. If you’re living in the South or in Cebu City, you have to travel to Subangdako, Mandaue City to visit the office of the NTC and meet Director Danilo Sy.

Neither calling the operator’s customer service hotline nor going to the business center of your operator would justify the time you’re going spend just to retrieve your P20-load.

"LANGAN-LANGAN LANG NAS’ ORAS", would be a good reason for your reluctance to run after your operator who stole your valued P20-load.

In my case, i have pursued retrieving it–my P110.00 (estimate)–taken out from my fresh P300-load i’ve just loaded to my cellphone on Monday, September 10, 2007.

Anyway, the case would be a good material for discussion in my radio program–HI-TECH ‘TA BAI! and in my friendster blog ( http://askjuntar.blogs.friendster.com/askjuntar/).

I’d purposely loaded a P300-SMART card hence the phone i was using had an insufficient load to allow a GPRS connection.

Despite several attempts, i wasn’t able to connect to the GPRS site of SMART. All but this message pops up on my screen:

            INTERNET CONNECTIONS (7736)

The GPRS CONNECTION COULD NOT BE ESTABLISHED, MAKE

SURE THAT YOU HAVE SUBSCRIBED TO THE DATA OPTION AND THAT

THE GPRS NETWORK IS ACCESSIBLE. CONTACT YOUR (SMART) SERVICE

               PROVIDER FOR MORE DETAILS.

Needless to argue whether i complied to the above conditions but i had been able to connect to the GPRS site of SMART the week before.

The customer service hotline of SMART (*888) told us that about P110.00 was deducted from my P300-load for calling six times abroad on that evening alone. I did not make such calls.

Hence you can’t file a complaint over the phone, i went to the SMART Wireless Center in SM City Cebu last Wednesday and got these details of the supposed overseas calls from my phone:

             NUMBER CALLED         TIME              DURATION

                00306975000000     19:54:56           11 SECS

                00306975000000     19:55:57           10 SECS

                00306975000000     20:05:34           11 SECS

                00306975000000     20:06:08           11 SECS

                00306975000000     20:16:59           11 SECS

                00306975000000     23:24:09           11 SECS

You may call the numbers under duration statistically impossible. However, it is technologically true using a timed machine to initiate and end a call.

Also, in their record the time i loaded the P300-SMART card is 20:11:29. On the phone, the reflected time i loaded the amout is 8:19pm Sept. 10 (meaning it’s 20:19:00).

Take note that the first four calls were all recorded as having initiated before i loaded the P300-SMART card. Why there was such deduction if indeed the calls were made before the card amount was loaded?

I told this arguement to the customer service officer of SMART. She told me that "maybe the phone i am using was programmed to iniate the call to that number".

I checked the phone, no calls were registered in the call register or dialled number box.

The customer service officer almost discouraged me from not pursuing my case. But i insisted and told her that even if the amount is small, i am still filing a complaint.

So, the complaint is filed and i was told to check after 24-48 hours if the "stolen" load shall be refunded by SMART.

I’ve checked the area code listing in the internet and i found out that the number (00306975000000) has an invalid area codes for any country.

I was still puzzled why such deductions were made when i honestly did not make any call. Is there something wrong went on in SMART? Was it a hacker victimizing SMART and their helpless customers? Was it just a glitch on the system? Was my phone devilized to initiate a call to infierno. :)

CEBUANO JOURNALISM

My CEBUANO JOURNALISM experience

Maayong Adlaw.

Radio broadcasting is a passion. TV-casting is glamorous. Newspaper reporting is once-upon-a-time exclusive for the English-writers.

Today, the

Cebu

media has bear the fruits cultivated for years by the vanguards of our own Cebuano dialect. Our local tabloid in Cebuano language—BANAT NEWS and SUNSTAR SUPER BALITA enjoyed much wider readership than the regular paper.

Cebuano journalism is a fashion that AM radio broadcasters were once the only practitioners in the media. But today, Cebuano journalism proves to be an effective tool in delivering news to the great masses.

Our local TV news programs penetrated the inner strata of the mass viewership because of its Cebuano news reports. Our radio stations in the AM (amplitude modulation) band faced stiff competition from all corners. Disc jockeys have from time to time rapped to the tune using Cebuano ad libs on the FM (frequency modulation) band.

Cebuano journalism is simply the use of our local dialect in the news reports and other articles in the media. But who coined the word “Cebuano Journalism”? Hundreds of journalism books never mentioned Cebuano journalism or Waray or Ilonggo journalism.

Maybe the deans of the various universities offering mass communication courses made this descriptive title of the subject in their prospectus inspired by the passion of the media in delivering the news in Cebuano dialect.

As far as I am concerned, the first TV news program in Cebuano language was the NEWSWATCH Cebuano Edition of RPN Channel 9 in 1987. I was part of its reportorial team with colleagues Bob Malazarte, Rey Martinez and Fides Palicte. Job Tabada was the brain behind it whose idea was to present to the Cebuanos a new brand of TV news program. At that time, all TV newscasts were in English.

NEWSWATCH Cebuano Edition did not live longer for lack of support from the management of the network. Soon, we’d part ways but I and Bob Malazarte reunited at the newly reopened ABS-CBN Channel 3 Cebu in July 1988.

ABS-CBN was keen on putting up a competitive local news program versus the well-established English news program of GMA-7 anchored by the respected Architect Melba Java.

Soon after its reborn, ABS-CBN Cebu launched on August 28, 1988 the TV Patrol Cebu using the dialect as its medium. We were admired for our use of the dialect but at the same instance we’d been receiving during our first months critiques on our “Bisaya” words. Our “Bisaya” was being questioned for its “revolutionary” or misfits.

A media colleague called our attention for the use of the word—NI-LANDING instead of NITUGPA ang ayroplano. Our reply then was we are adopting what is being spoken by the youth and other people we’ve met on the streets. Our objective then was to be easily understood by not using “law’m nga binisaya”.

Many of our Cebuano writers called our attention on our usage of English words that we usually prefixed with Cebuano words: Ex. Nag-TOUR instead of NISUROY or NIBYAHE, gi-CONFISCATE instead of GISAKMIT,  gi-RAID for gi-ronda.

We didn’t use napulo ug duha for dose or twelve when writing numbers. We believed that we were better understood if we use the Spanish or the English words when it comes to numbers. We found it very hard for our listerner-viewer to easily grasp the Cebuano for numbers.

We admitted, though, that there were mistakes in the use of Cebuano words on our news program. A caller, who introduced himself as a member of the LUDABI, told me that it’s wrong to say “tsansa” for chance hence an appropriate word is higayon/kahigayonan.

The former USIS (United States Information Service) Director in Cebu , Karl Nelson, visited our newsroom one afternoon and took a view on the large map of

Cebu

City

in the wall. He quipped, “Asa man and utlanan dinhi sa

Cebu

ug Mandaue?” I felt guilty and told myself here’s a G.I. Joe who speaks well our lingo. At that time, we usually used “boundary” instead of utlanan in our scripts.

When technology was available that gave us more flexibility in our scripts, a spelling problem of the Cebuano words occurred. We have to superimpose char-gen (texts made by a character generator) over our video for some details. We occasionally ended with a misspelled Cebuano words. We only knew it when our attention were called by some “concerned citizens” (probably, members of the LUDABI).

Today, we can still read misspelled Cebuano words in the tabloids and on the char-gen and graphics of TV news reports. What’s wrong with us? Why can’t we spell correctly our very own Cebuano words?

Haaay… Maayo pa ang English kay atong gitun-an sukad grade one. Ang Binisaya wa’ gyud nato tun-i. Probably, I am logically right. We didn’t study our own language.

Ang maayong balita—Cebuano journalism has been offered in the mass communication course in some schools in

Cebu

. The students are being prepared to write scripts in Cebuano as if they don’t know their dialect.

However, an instructor like me has a dilemma what rules and whose rules should be followed? Since June this year, my class has studied grammar and spelling guides written by 3 authors. Many of their supposed rules in Cebuano grammar and spelling have conflicting details.

For instance, one author who is an associate editor of a magazine says that “O” should always be used in the last syllable of any Cebuano word.

While another author who happened to be from Mindanao says in his Visayas-English dictionary that “O” should only be used in the last syllable if it is before the letters: K, G, NG, N, L, Y. His examples are: tambok, tagok, hulog, salog, silong, dabong, tipon, baton, habol, putol, kahoy, tumoy.

The rule for “O” did not stop there. If it comes before the letters: D, S, T—U should be used if it is stressed (Ex. Tamud, takus, kamut); O if unstressed (Ex. Tuhod, kumot).

If it is before B, M, and P, the second author says it should always be U. Examples: taub, lawum, dakup, kulub, salum, gahum.

Pastilan! Naglibog na ang akong mga estudyante. According to a writer, the correct usage of O and U has been debated for decades. Tomas Hermosisima once wrote—“ANG SAMOKAN NGA O ug U” (BIsaya, August 5, 1964).

Whew! Grabe! Kadugay na diay ani gilalisan.

By the way, U is always use at the first and middle syllables of any Cebuano word.

I have collected (not physically but mentally) some mistakes in the usage of Cebuano words:

A Cebuano tabloid reports:

Ang torneyo mosikad ugma diha sa

Cebu

City

Sports

Center

.”

I went over the English paper for the English version of the report and I’d found out that the Cebuano word—mosikad is the writer’s translation for “kicks off”. Simply, we can write instead:

Ang torneyo mosugod ugma diha… “

We still hear this line from a police reporter in the radio:

          Ang wa’ mailhing’ suspetsado…”

Suspect, according to a dictionary, means—“a person who is suspected, esp. one suspected of a crime, offense, or the like”. In short, a suspect has already been identified.

An appropriate line for the radio reporter would be:

          Ang wa’ mailhing’ kawatan/tulisan/mamumuno…”

On TV news, char-gen and graphic titles often have mistakes like these:

Dan Legaspi” (No, it’s not a name of a person but it referred to Legaspi

Street. The right way– Dalan  or Da’an Legaspi)

“Ug and Og” (UG is the conjunction AND, O is a particle. Examples: Ikaw

ug ako; Mopalit ko og lapis.)

There are words that are written in Cebuano but their binisaya pronunciation would sound as if the reader doesn’t know how to pronounce it correctly like the examples listed  below:

Drayber (driver), naytklab (night club), plaslayt (flashlight), hayskul

         (high school), obertaym (overtime).

Bisaya-a bai uy!–The usual reaction of those who hear broadcasters reading their scripts in Cebuano tongue. My suggestion is to retain the English  spelling so that anyone who reads it pronounce it properly.

I have been texting “Inday Tikay” on her Saturday’s radio program of these fun bisaya words that I have tried to trace its origin in a fun way. It’s joke time! :

Lusyang, means batan-ong babaye apan mura na’g cuarenta

anyos. Gikan sa English phrase—LOSE YOUNG. (lol)

Depresyon, originated from the English words DEEP PRESS which

                                       means in Cebuano imudmod pag-ayo.(lol).

Kultura, means naandang buhat nasunod gikan sa katigulangan.

from English CULT SURE which means cults are really

     practicing it. (lol)

Haplas, lana or lotion gamiton pagpadangog sa pagmasahe . From

the English words HALF LAST—katunga ra ang epekto sa

(lol)

Mama, babayeng’ may anak na. In English, MOTHER which means

MAMA DEAR. (lol)

Lagsik,  abtik, mura’g wa’y sakit, sabaan, sige’g katawa. In

English, LAG SICK—means lisod masakit. (lol)

That’s all Cebuano folks.

Here’s a story from Sunstar Cebu about my interview with the barangay captain of Ibo, Lapulapu City in 2004. I was accused of asking "rude" questions. I find this article biased and ignorant of the facts of the story. I was also not given a space to react on the statement of the barangay official who was illegally collecting "terminal fee" from multicab for hire in his barangay.

Para sa lahat ng PINOYS!

Kung Pinoy
Philippines si Noah….

…Ganito ang mangyayari sa barko. Read along…

at

No No No  papayag lang daw si Congressman kung may matatanggap siyang

30% commission.
That Pisses Me Of Nagtayo ng unyon ang mga kinuha niyang manggagawa at nag-strike.

Sneezy

Soapbox   "in aid of legislation".

No dahil hindi raw nito iginalang ang separation ng church Place Of Worship at state

Capital Building .

Battleship  "Towards a Strong Republic". "Hindi po ako pumayag kaya hanggang ngayon po ay may TRO ang pag-gawa ng arko.

Sa palagay ko po kailangan ko pa ng 10 taon para matapos ang inyong proyekto". Ang huling wika ni Noah. Napa-iling ang Diyos at sinabing, "Di ko na kailangang wasakin pa ang bansang ito. Hayaan ko na lang kayong sumira nito."

Hate Letter Against Filipinos by Art Bell

Hate Letter Against Filipinos

This is a hate letter coming from a radio talk show host Mr. Art Bell from Nevada . I dont consider myself as patriotic but please read my reply below in BOLD LETTERS and send this to as many of your friends as possible

until it reaches him.

Subject: HATE LETTER

This is a very disturbing open E-mail letter to all Filipinos around the world; specially here in North America !, from a man who has the power to reach millions of people. (he’s a radio talk host)

Please read on…………..

This is an open letter email by Art Bell, a radio talk show host in Nevada (more info in the email itself). Here is yet another person who has taken; advantage of his power and privilege to use hateful words and racial stereotypes that breed further ignorance and intolerance in our society.

Art Bell is a talk radio host who has two shows that he broadcasts from his home in Nevada , that is rebroadcast by 400 stations across the country.

He’s written 2 books. He lived in Okinawa , Japan for some years and had a radio program on the English station here. And, though it’s hard to believe after reading the following letter from him, he actually has been to the Philippines (he’s traveled fairly extensively around the world).

Check out his website listed at the end to get a glimpse at this fool who’s spreading this hateful ignorance. An d check his wife as well. This letter is so degrading, I think it’s really important that everybody read this and not attack him, but respond to him in a civilized manner because otherwise his thoughts will be reaffirmed. Understand that not everyone has a viewpoint like we do, and that this is an opinion of someone who hopefully can be changed only by civil actions.
………………………………………..

Filipinos…..*make me puke* (Art Bell)

As we’ve all come to notice, in the past few decades, Filipinos have begun to infest the United States like some sort of disease. Their extensive involvement in the U.S. Armed Forces is proof of the trashy kind of qualities all filipinos tend to exhibit on a regular basis. You can see this clearly by studying the attitudes and cultural Icons of most Filipino Americans.

Origins of Pinoys/Pinays:

Are they really asian? Well we’ve come to accept the fact the filipinos come from a part of the world known as South East Asia . But the term " Asia " is used in the wrong way. You may notice that contemporary Filipino Americans try very hard to associate themselves with groups that we know as Asian. I cannot count the number of times I have seen a ‘ Third World ‘ Filipino try to connect themselves to the chinese or Japanese people. There is no connection and here’s why. The Philippines is a Third W orld country. Nothing respectable has EVER been created by Filipino people during our entire human history. Young filipino men in America have become obsessed with "import racing". They have an enormously perverted affection for Japanese cars. It’s a common phenomenon. In their minds, these Filipinos somehow believe that they are asian and that it somehow connects them to Japanese people and japanese cars. They often take credit for the ingenuity of Japanese people and say how it’s an " Asian thing". This term…"Asian thing" derived directly from African American slang "black thang". "It’s a black thang." "It’s an asian thang."

You can see the connection. It’s even funnier that, in Japan , Filipinos are heavily discriminated against. The only filipinos that can live successfully in Japan are the filipino prostitutes. But that’s the case for most Filipino people no matter where they live in the world. Now we’ve come down to this fact…and it is a fact.

Nothing in Filipino Culture can be seen as Asian.

They have no architectural, artistic, or cultural influence which is in ANY way, asian. Thinking of the great countries in Asia such as Japan , Korea , and China there is no way you can possibly connect the Philippine Islands. This assault by filipino americans to connect themselves with the great peoples of North East Asia is foul and disgusting. Try visiting a young filipino’s web site too.

You’ll see something called the "Asian IRC Ring". It has to do with the chatrooms. The most horrible thing about this is that these TRASHY people are trying to associate themselves with Asia again!! People in Asia don’t act like this at all. What we are seeing here is the natural Filipino in its element with full access to technology and this is how they act! You will consistently see this behavior over and over again.

Another interesting thing is that these "thirdworld" people also frequent RC chatrooms such as #chinese #japan and #asi an. They must believe that they are somehow related racially or culturally to North Asians. But it’s completely WRONG! There might have been some distant contact With China and even less with Japan during World War II, but these people are actually more closely related to african americans and Mexican americans.

Do the parents of these young filipinos know what’s going on? Would they accept this? I believe that they would and do. This is the natural "Trash" element in filipinos manifesting itself. Nothing good has ever come from Philippines and I don’t believe anything good ever will.

Recognizing your Roots (A Message to Filipinos). To all filipino people:
Please recognize your ROOTS! You come from the Third World ! You country is a disgusting and filthy place. Most people there live in poverty! Your culture has MUCH MORE SPANISH influence than chinese, and absolutely no JAPANESE influence whatsoever. People in Japan and China , do not act like you. They do not constantly talk about sex and they have a MUCH HIGHER level of RESPECT for each other. There is NO WAY that you can connect yourself to Asia other than location.

Your culture and technological advancement does no! t even come CLOSE to What Chinese, people have done in the past and what Japanese and Korean people are doing now! Everything you do is distinctly filipino. You cannot take credit for Ja panese cars, video games, or Hentai! It’s not an "asian thing" it’s an "American thing". You have no concept of culture…no concept of asian ideas or asian philosophy! Can you demonstrate how you use Confucianism or Taoism in you everyday life?? You can’t. And you will NEVER be able to.

I understand that you are trying to create an identity for yourselves as young people… but it is NOT related to Asia . Your Identity is Filipino.
That’s all you are. Just Filipino. Think about what that means….

——————————————

I find this funny, he is right in some ways where we, as Filipinos don’t actually have an "Identity". I think this is due to the confusion of our mixed races from Hispanic, Chinese, American and Malay origins. I see it in malls, imagine young generations wearing ski caps and ski goggles in a tropical country, baggy low rise pants like that of African Americans living in the Bronx of New York, not to mention endless whitening products being sold at department stores and drug stores.

But his ignorance also blinds him from the other truth. That while we may glorify Anime shows and Japanese Internet gaming, he is not aware that a nameless Filipino may be responsible for some technical aspects of some Japanese software. He is not aware of our contribution to the the society in general .Technological advancements that may have aided post war navigations and landing on the moon. That the antibiotic Erythromycin was discovered by Dr. Abelardo Aguilar from Iloilo creating the brand "Ilosone".

Thomas Edison may have discovered the electric light bulb and the fluorescent lighting was thought up by Nikola Tesla. But the fluorescent lamp we use today was invented by Agapito Flores (a Cebuano named Benigno Flores of Bantayan Island, according to the Philippine Daily inquirer), a Filipino scientist. Americans helped then-Philippine leader Ramon Magsaysay to develop it for worldwide commerce. That the personal physician of former U.S. Pres. Bill Clinton is Eleanor "Connie" Concepcion Mariano, a Filipina doctor who was the youngest captain in the US Navy. A Filipino writer Jose Rizal could read and write at age 2, and grew up to speak more than 20 languages, includind Latin, Greek, German, French and Chinese.

Or that a Filipino genius was responsible for the near hiatus in the PENTAGON and White House nearly infiltrationg their closely guarded secrets with the "ILOVEYOU" bug. Nuisance maybe, but still one heck of a ‘beautiful mind’…not to be underestimated.

The list goes on and on, but who cares right? Certainly not Mr. Art Bell…Boy, I’m not surprised.

Perhaps Art Bell does not know that although we consider ourselves ASIAN because we are strategically located in the Southeast asian region of which our nearest neighbors are Malays, ASIA does not mean only Chinese and Japanese race of people. Then maybe it is his connotation that "Asia" meant only our economically successful, paler brothers and he considers Malays such as Thais, Malaysians, Indonesians, and ourselves as a " Third World " race. Then it is "his" ignonimity that would make a civilized person of whatever race puke. Imagine literally connecting Chinese, Koreans and Japanese to the Philippine Islands which is archipelagos away from the countries he has mentioned. I also wonder where he got the impression that we aspire to be Japanese( ???) Hispanics maybe but not the Japanese. But even Hispanics today do not mind sharing their "surnames" to their Asian brothers who they have colonized for 3 centuries.

Another sad reality that although most Filipinos working overseas are domestic helpers and prostitutes, who does he think educates the toddlers of Hong Kong , Singapore , Taiwan and Tokyo ? Parents of these countries rarely have time spent with their children, leaving them to their Filipino nannies. And with regard to prostitution. Filipinos are not the only ones working as one. I HARDLY SEE FILIPINOS STARRING IN PORN MOVIES. THERE MIGHT BE A FEW FILIPINOS WE HAVEN’T SEEN , BUT MOST ARE FROM MR. ART BELL’S RACE.

He also mentioned that we have no concept of culture..no concept of asian ideas or asian philosophy. How can we demonstrate Confucianism or Taoism in a Christian nation? IS HE INFORMED THAT THE PHILIPPINE S IS THE ONLY PREDOMINANTLY CHRISTIAN/CATHOLIC NATION IN ASIA ?! YOU HAVE TO USE COMMON SENSE IN A LOT OF THINGS SOMETIMES…

We do not need to create an identity for ourselves. We are who we are. Our identity stems from the anonymity we live in this world. How we contribute silently towards the progress of the world and not just one country. Although the Filipino blood may be tainted with malice, corruption, poverty and prostitution, it is not a perfect race… But so are the others. Maybe Mr. Art Bell needs to think about this.

WE MAY NOT BE PERFECT MR. BELL BUT AT LEAST WE STILL HAVE VALUES. FOR ONE THING WE DON’T PUT OUR AGING PARENTS IN NURSING HOMES BECAUSE "THEY’RE SIMPLY OLD AND WORTHLESS". WE DONT HAVE AS MUCH NUMBERS OF SINGLE MOTHERS WHO GET PREGNANT IN THEIR VERY EARLY TEENS AND EVENTUALLY BECOME PARASITES OF THE GOVERNMENT FOR YEARS AND YEARS.

YES…WE CAME TO YOUR COUNTRY TO WORK, TO EARN DECENT MONEY (HALF OF WHICH BY THE WAY GOES TO TAXES BECAUSE THERE’S SO MANY SOCIAL PARASITES FROM YOUR RACE).AND BY THE WAY, MOST EDUCATED PEOPLE THAT I WORK WITH DON’T COME FROM YOUR RACE… THEY’RE ACTUALLY IMMIGRANTS TOO. AND THOSE EDUCATED ONES DO NOT ACT LIKE YOU DO, PERHAPS BECAUSE THEY’VE REALLY BEEN WELL EDUCATED..AFTER ALL THAT’S SAID… WHO IS THE IGNORANT ONCE AGAIN?!

Pinay wins it big in London

By Alfred Yuson

The Philippine Star 05/16/2004

Patricia Evangelista, a 19-year- old, Mass Communications sophomore of University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman, did the country proud Friday night by besting 59 other student contestants from 37 countries in the 2004 International Public Speaking competition conducted by the English Speaking Union (ESU) in London .

She triumphed over a field o f exactly 60 speakers from all over the English-speaking world, including the United States , United Kingdom and Australia , reported Maranan.

The board of judges’ decision was unanimous, according to contest chairman Brian Hanharan of the British broadcasting Corp. (BBC).

PATRICIA’S SHORT SPEECH WORTH READING….

———————————————————

BLONDE AND BLUE EYES

When I was little, I wanted what many Filipino children all over the country wanted. I wanted to be blond, blue-eyed, and white.

I thought — if I just wished hard enough and was good enoug h, I’d wake upon Christmas morning with snow outside my window and freckles across my nose!

More than four centuries under western domination does that to you. I have sixteen cousins. In a couple of years, there will just be five of us left in the Philippines , the rest will have gone abroad in search of "greener pastures." It’s not just an anomaly; it’s a trend; the Filipino diaspora. Today, about eight million Filipinos are scattered around the world.

There are those who disapprove of Filipinos who choose to leave. I used to. Maybe this is a natural reaction of someone who was left behind, smiling for family pictures that get emptier with each succeeding year. Desertion, I called it. My country is a land that has perpetually fought for the freedom to be itself. Our heroes offered their lives in the struggle against the Spanish, the Japanese, the Americans. To pack up and deny that identity is tantamount to spitting on that sacrifice.

Or is it? I don’t think so, not anymore. True, there is no denying this phenomenon, aided by the fact that what was once the other side of the world is now a twelve-hour plane ride away. But this is a borderless world, where no individual can claim to be purely from where he is now. My mother is of Chinese descent, my father is a quarter Spanish, and I call myself a pure Filipino-a hybrid of sorts resulting from a combination of cultures.

Each square mile anywhere in the world is made up of people of different ethnicities, with national identities and individual personalities. because of this, each square mile is already a microcosm of the world. In as much as this blessed spot that is England is the world, so is my neighborhood back home.

Seen this way! , the Filipino Diaspora, or any sort of dispersal of populations, is not as ominous as so many claim. It must be understood. I come from a Third World country, one that is still trying mightily to get back on its feet after many years of dictatorship. But we shall make it, given more time. Especially now, when we have thousands of eager young minds who graduate from college every year. They have skills. They need jobs. We cannot absorb them all.

A borderless world presents a bigger opportunity, yet one that is not so much abandonment but an extension of identity . Even as we take, we give back. We are the 40,000 skilled nurses who support the UK ’s National Health Service. We are the quarter-of-a-million seafarers manning most of the world’s commercial ships. We are your software engineers in Ireland , your construction workers in the Middle East, your doctors and caregivers in North America, and, your musical artists in London ’s West End .

Nationalism isn’t bound by time or place. People from other nations migrate to create new nations, yet still remain essentially who they are. British society is itself an example of a multi-cultural nation, a melting pot of races, religions, arts and cultures . We are, indeed, in a borderless world!

Leaving sometimes isn’t a matter of choice. It’s coming back that is. The Hobbits of the shire travelled all over Middle-Earth, but they chose to come home, richer in every sense of the word. We call people like these balikbayans or the ‘returnees’ — those who followed their dream, yet choose to return and share their mature talents and good fortune.

In a few years, I may take advantage of whatever opportunities come my way. But I will come home. A borderless world doesn’t preclude the idea of a home. I’m a Filipino, and I’ll always be one. It isn’t about just geography; it isn’t about boundaries. It’s about giving back to the country that shaped me.

And that’s going to be more important to me than seeing snow outside my windows on a bright Christmas morning.

Mabuhay and Thank you.

So, be proud, you are a Filipino,…and not like Mr. Art Bell. Please do send this to as many person as you can until it reaches him
