STUDENT VIEWS ON CHILDREN’S TELEVISION (Part 1)

Uncategorized No Comments »

Here are some of the observations and views made by my students in "Media Law & Ethics" class regarding various children’s television shows.

I asked them to monitor children’s television and child-friendly programs. By definition of the law (Children’s Television Act of 1997), CHILDREN’s TELEVISION programs–are those that are specifically designed for child viewing while CHILD-FRIENDLY programs–are those that are NOT specifically designed for child viewing but can help in the development of the children provided that it has no content which would cause physical, mental, and  emotional harm to them.

Here are the comments made by my students:

"BLAZING TEENS" (gma)

by: A. Logarta, et al group

…For our group, we can really say that the program is indeed designed for the kids/children because:

  • It is not that interesting for people who are of our age (18, 19 y.o.) anymore
  • There is no evidence such as killing, shooting, bombing, etc. in the program. It only features on the talents and skills in handling yoyo.
  • The program teaches not only things about yoyo, but it also teaches the kids who are watching the importance of teamwork.

…As a viewer,we value a television program more when it is wholesome, realistic, easy to understand and above all, educational. Nothing will compare to a program which helps us learn things which are not taught in the classroom.

"ULTIMATE BOOK OF SPELL" (qtv)

by: Press Express group

…The program has advantages and disadvantages. It encourages true friendship by experiencing some rough moments in life. The magical exhibitions demonstrated in the program open avenues for wide imaginations by the children.

However, there are violent scenes such as fighting actions which may affect child development.

"CARDCAPTOR SAKURA"

by: Kinakusgan group

…is not so friendly to children since it features fighting scenes. However, there is moral lesson in the violent scenes.

…The series somehow exposes family love, brotherly love, and the  importance of friendship.

"WANSAPANATYM" (abs-cbn)

by: Dangerous Creators group

…This fantaserye has negative effects on young children because they can not clearly mark the borderline between reality and fantasy. The themes often feature battles between good and evil.

It was made through fiction since it has been presumed that children are more likely to be more entertained and interested with fiction stories.

"GOIN’ BULILIT" (abs-cbn)

by: K. Arevalo, et. al group

…The program can most likely be classified as a child-friendly program rather than children television since it is not specifically designed for viewing by children. As such, it also caters the adults as a part of its target audience.

For we all know, a child learns as to what he sees, hears and as to what he is told. The topics of the jokes include some social and political issues which may or might come vague according to how a child perceives. Children may be too young to know and be aware of these political issues.

Another which children may imitate is the treatment of a sort of teasing a cast who happens to be vertically challenged individual in the person of Dagul. Audience might imitate the way they make fun of Dagul when they happen to see like one in the street or in the school.

At times, these children are also used as instruments to perpetrate jokes against a news television program over a rival channel:

"Ang panonood ng TV ng buong araw ay masama sa mata kaya ‘wag manoood ng 24 ORAS."

CEBUANO FEATURES

Uncategorized No Comments »

In my Cebuano Journalism (Masscom 9) class at the University of San Jose Recoletos, i have  required my students (about 90 in numbers) to produce each a Cebuano featurette. It is about anything Cebuano or Cebu or the Visayan culture and places.

Me & My Class

The students wrote the scripts and had it edited by me before they produced it using a digital audio editing software. The finished materials were burned in CDs and played eventually in DYAB’s Sunday radio program–"Sugbuanon Na Ni" anchored by Ahmed Cuizon.

The features have been aired under the segment–"Lima ka Gutlo". Five to six features have been aired every Sunday since November 2007 and expected to end by February 2008.

In the "About Me" box, just below the podcast,  in my profile are the Cebuano features which you can listen in the player provided by esnips.com. Some of the features have yet to be uploaded.

If you wish to download the features. Go to Cebuano features folder in www.esnips.com by clicking here. Just click the title of the Cebuano feature and look for the download button to save it in your PC.
